he folks - been spending the summer backing up Tumbledown House, Aaron Parrett, and others. And rafting and hiking and whatnot. I'm about to start recording with Tumbledown House for their first full-length record. If you haven't heard them, check them out at tumbledownhouse.com.

Back to the john dendy show come fall, y'all. j

sisterkisser

is it losing that's like kissing your sister? no, that's a tie, I think. anyway, I made the first cut of the owl lounge songwriter contest finals, the final four, but didn't win, drat. Tumbledown House won, and they're good. And the best news is that I'm going to play bass for them at the owl on 6/14. And the other best news is that I still get to open a porterhouse show. And the other best news is that the people really listened. dizzy gillespie said applause is like food for a musician. applause is good. attention is better (as long as it's followed by applause.)

good news

heynow friends -

So I went down to Livingston Thursday to play a songwriter contest, and what do you know, I won the humdinger. At least I won that particular night. So the big fat prize is opening a Porterhouse Productions show in or around Bozeman, which is the reason I played. I'm jacked. Heading back down to play the final round this Wednesday.

It is so fun to play for people who are listening.

well, friends, after a year in the making, holly and the adhocs exploded on the launching pad. all bands explode, but you have to hope it happens on re-entry instead. a couple orbits, at least. under the weight of superstardom, maybe? alas, not this time.

so I now have sunday afternoons free. tennis, anyone?
see you out on the solio showlio, yo.

the band, man

Hey friends. Just wanted to share a little joy with you here.

My last two Helena shows have been a new thing entirely thanks to Toby Ferguson on drums and Clay Scott on violin. It has been a blast. Toby is a great musician and really listens, and I won't even qualify that by saying "for a drummer." He's great. And as for Clay, well, did you ever hear a swingin irish snakecharming fiddler? I don't know about Clay, but his fiddle gets around.

Thanks to the Windbag for a great venue and to everyone who's been coming out to those gigs. I gotta get those dudes on the road.

NW tour

Finally back from a great swing through the soggy northwest. If it's record rainfall in Portland, that's a lot of rain.

Thanks to all y'all who made a point to come out and hear me, whether in portland, eugene, corvallis, moscow, spokane, or my own livingston and bozeman. Looking forward to my next swing through in February or March.

Till then, stay high and dry, my my my. jd

corvallis

Hey new corvallis friends, thanks for a great time. Sesh, thanks for sitting in. Bill at the gallery, great vibe at that joint. Thanks Malynda for the poems -- have a great show next week. Looking forward to my next swing through your fair, damp city. Jeff, more power to you at Sahalie.

fun MT shows

Hey friends. Had a great swing through Montana this month playing Bozeman, Butte, Helena, Great Falls, Missoula, and Kalispell.

Thanks to Aaron Parrett for the double-bills in Butte, Great Falls, and Helena. Thanks to Clay Scott (fiddle) for sitting in in Helena and Toby Ferguson (drums) for sitting in in Helena and Kalispell.

Drums, man, drums. Sounds like the new record sounds.

And thanks to all who put me up around the state - especially to Susan for the long stay in Helena.

Lookout northwest. This ain't no coffee house tour (mostly). j

last deli show

Well, last Deli show for a while, anyway.

Jimmy and Marie were so cool to have music out on the porch this summer. I did every other Thursday with different guests each time.

Played with Bayard and Daniel, Deb, Virginia, and Shaney, Aaron Parrett, Burt and Susan, and last night with Steve O'Neill.

The cool thing about writing songs and buying the PA and booking the gigs is you get to play with whomever you want.

Anyway, it was a great summer run. With fall closing in I'm turning toward the October and November dates. Check the calendar, yo.

Aaron Parrett and the State Champions

Come to the Yellowstone Music Festival on September 3 in Gardiner. They've got some great bands lined up.

I'll be playing bass with Aaron Parrett and the State Champions. Aaron's a great songwriter from Great Falls.

The rest of the lineup includes The Flat Mountain Girls, Kelly Joe Phelps, Taarka, and Trampled by Turtles. Should be a good time.

weiser

Hey friends. Just got back from 5 days in Wieser, ID, at the Old Time Fiddler's Contest.

What you do is go and set up camp in Stickerville and play music as much as your fingers allow. You don't go to the contest. It's a big pile of some of the best people I know.

My highlight jam was Cuban and Puerto Rican music with some guy playing a quatro. Percolatin' stuff, man.

So if I met you at Weiser and you're reading this, sign my guest book so I know how to find you. And if the rest of you ever get a chance to go over there, do it.

Over and out. j

Fall Tour

Hey all.

I'm not playing much for a while this summer. Getting out in the backcountry and enjoying the world. Mining the microrecorder and paper scraps from the last year.

I'll play a couple summer shows, but won't get around too much until the fall, when I'll hit the northwest again. If you know of a place I should play, let me know.

See you on the next swing. j

chapman

Hey all.

My friend Chapman Welch is coming to Montana, and we're playing a couple shows. This guy is a great musician. We've never played together outside of somebody's living room, and I'm looking forward. Gardiner and Helena, 5/19 & 20. Check the calendar page, yo. j

good swing

Well, friends, I had a great swing through the west. That show in Spokane sure was fun. The Shop is a great place to play.

The people there pay attention to the music, which is a real treat for the musician. You better come to play.

Looking forward to my next trip out there come fall. Until then, a show here or there. Stay tuned, yo. john

all's quiet riot on the western front

Hey all.

Sitting now in the worst place in the whole redneck country - the Tri-Cities of Washington. You can't turn left, and it's pretty much Applebees.

Had a great time in Corvallis the other night, playing that hip wine joint and shutting down the China D.

Hitting Spokompton on Wednesday and Missouki on Friday. Then home, James. Hope to see you spokancers and missoulers. Over and out. j

No News is Good News

Hey, friends.

The main news is that the News page is up. Yippee. Also the guest book, so sign in and let me know who's out there.

Heading out west here in a couple days. Check the calendar page if you like.

Had a good time in New Mexico - Las Cruces, Silver City, Albuquerque - and hoping to get back down there in the fall.

As my friend Jason Patton says, "Take it easy, but don't take it slow." Over and out, girl scout.
